Proclaimed in 2017 by the United Nations General Assembly, the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) seeks to stimulate ocean science and knowledge generation to reverse the decline of the state of the ocean system and catalyse new opportunities for sustainable development of the ocean and its ressources. The Ocean Decade provides a convening framework for scientists and stakeholders from diverse sectors to develop the scientific knowledge and the partnerships needed to accelerate and harness advances in ocean science to achieve a better understanding of the ocean system, and deliver science-based solutions to achieve the 2030 Agenda. A key challenge identified in the Decade Implementation Plan focuses on the development of a comprehensive digital representation of the ocean, including a dynamic ocean map, which provides free and open access for exploring, discovering, and visualizing past, current, and future ocean conditions in a manner relevant to diverse stakeholders.

The Session will focus on the challenges and opportunities the Decade offers in term of dramatically scaling up the way we collect and share ocean data, expand our global coverage through cooperation, invest in exploration of the sea floor through innovative multi-stakeholder partnerships, and grow the scientific capacity of all nations to collect, manage, analyze, and use ocean bathymetric data through mapping applications for better stewardship of ocean resources.
